An Education for the Women of Somaliland
Founded in 2009, the Abaarso Network enables transformative change in Somaliland, East Africa, through educating and empowering the human capital needed to achieve ethical and effective development. The Network includes three world-class educational institutions that provide high-potential students with critical access, support, and leadership development. The Abaarso Network includes three school systems in Somaliland (Somalia): a residential high school known as Abaarso School; Barwaaqo Women’s University, offering a four-year degree in education; and Kaabe Montessori primary schools.
The Republic of Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia in 1991 and maintains a stable government and border. But after decades of war, generations of Somali girls have grown up with little to no education or chance of economic opportunity. To help themselves, their families and their country’s developing economy, these Somali girls must have quality educational opportunities.
Barwaaqo University, founded in 2017, is located in Baliga Cas village outside the capital city. The mission of Barwaaqo is to empower Somalilanders/Somali women to become professionals who drive development throughout their community. We believe in the empowering of Somali women to become professionals who drive development throughout their community. Barwaaqo’s first phase focuses on a School of Education that will turn Somali women into leaders in the classroom, who will then go on to educate the next generation of Somali youth across the country.
