Job Description

We are currently recruiting a lead elementary classroom teacher (flexible grade level, but will be between grades 2 to 6, depending on teacher’s past classroom experience and areas of expertise). You will be working for our non-profit educational program in the beautiful coastal town of Cabrera, Dominican Republic. The program was founded by Fiona and Anthony Austin, 15 years ago as a way to offer low cost (and even free to many) English education to the average Dominican and Haitian family.

This position requires a very special type of person who is passionate about really making a positive difference in the lives of children and not just focused on getting the job done each day.

Applicant must have a teacher certification and at least 1 year of classroom experience. Teacher will be required to plan their own lessons and be able to work with a very flexible, loose, curriculum where they will be creating units and figuring out what the students need, instead of just following a basic guideline which won’t work for every type of learner. Students are almost entirely ESL learners, as the position is located in the Dominican Republic (first language – Spanish), so the applicant must be very patient and flexible. Some Spanish language skills would be helpful but not required, as it will be English immersion classes.

The position will begin September 1st, 2023 and run until June 1st, 2024, with the possibility of extension. Ideally we would have the applicant visit the school for at least a 1 week trial period during this 2022/23 school year before commitment by either party, in order to get a feel for the position, community, etc. as moving abroad can sometimes be overwhelming and we want to insure the candidate is fully comfortable and sure before making the commitment.

The salary will be a comfortable living salary for life in the Dominican Republic. However, as the living wages are much lower in the Dominican Republic and this is position involves working with a non-profit organization, teacher should not expect to earn an amount that will offer additional savings during the length of their contract. This position is more about the amazing experience and the difference you will be making in the lives of this children, rather than the income. However, as stated above, the salary will allow for comfortable living while here in Cabrera.

Please contact, Director – Fiona Austin, at [email protected] for more information or to apply. Please be sure to think over the position and if you believe it is a good fit for you before applying. We look forward to hearing from you soon!
